29 September 1961
On 29 September 1961, during the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, in a small village called San Damiano, in the province of Piacenza, in northern Italy, a young foreign woman wearing a sky-blue headscarf came to ask a family for 500 lire. She wanted the money to purchase three candles for the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in San Giovanni Rotondo, where Padre Pio is buried. Aunt Adele replied to her that they were very poor, and that they only had a thousand lire, which had been lent to them.
The visitor answered:
– But I have to make this offering, just the same.
Aunt Adele, embarrassed, told her about her niece Rosa, who was bedridden, seriously ill. In fact, Rosa had just been discharged from hospital, to die at home. After various surgical operations, there was no more hope for her. She was suffering from perforation peritonitis. The young lady asked to see Rosa, and entered the house.
– Come on, cheer up! What’s the matter? Rosa explains
-Have you got faith in Padre Pio?
-Yes, I have great faith in him. I have been praying to him for a while now, but I’m not better yet.
-If you have faith in Padre Pio, he will cure you.
The church clock struck midday.
Come on, up you get!
-I can’t.
-Give me your hand.
Rosa could not get up.
-Give me your other hand.
Rosa held out both hands and felt a strong shock.
-Come on, get up!
Rosa got up and realised that she was cured. Together they recited the Angelus and five Our Fathers, five Hail Marys and five Glorias, in keeping with intentions to Padre Pio. The young woman placed her hands on Rosa’s wounds and they healed instantly. Then she said:
-You must go to Padre Pio.
So in May 1962, Rosa went to San Giovanni Rotondo with the parish pilgrimage. On the Saturday morning, in the square, she found the young woman with the sky-blue headscarf, who asked her:
-Do you recognise me?
-Let it be known now that I am the Mother of Consolation and the Afflicted.
After Mass, I will take you to Padre Pio who will give you a mission to accomplish. After Mass, I will take you to Padre Pio who will give you a mission to accomplish. After Mass, while Rosa was heading towards the sacristy, she saw the Blessed Virgin shining in place of the altar to the Sacred Heart, who had appeared to St Margaret Mary.
The Blessed Virgin led her to Padre Pio who gave her the mission to look after the sick, especially spiritually. He encourages her and promises to help her.
For over two years, Rosa looked after the sick and frequently went on pilgrimages to San Giovanni Rotondo.
Then Padre Pio told her that her mission had been accomplished and that an important event was awaiting her at home.

16 October 1964
On 16 October 1964, while Rosa was saying the Angelus, she heard a voice outside:
-Come on in. Come out, I’m waiting for you.
She went out and saw a large white cloud in the sky, surrounded by gold and silver stars and by roses of all colours.
A red globe detached itself from the cloud and came to rest on the pear tree in the vegetable garden.
Out of this globe came the Heavenly Mother, surrounded by a radiant light. On her head she wore a crown carrying the twelve apostles.
It was then that the Holy Virgin gave Rosa the first message.
The First Message
MY DAUGHTER, I COME FROM VERY FAR AWAY.
TELL THE WORLD THAT EVERYONE MUST PRAY,
BECAUSE JESUS CAN NO LONGER CARRY THE CROSS.
I WANT EVERYONE TO BE SAVED,
GOOD AND BAD ALIKE.
I AM THE MOTHER OF LOVE,
THE MOTHER OF ALL: YOU ARE ALL MY CHILDREN.
THIS IS WHY I WANT EVERYONE TO BE SAVED,
THIS IS WHY I CAME:
TO LEAD THE WORLD TO PRAYER,
BECAUSE PUNISHMENT IS NEAR.
I WILL COME BACK EVERY FRIDAY TO GIVE YOU SOME MESSAGES
THAT YOU MUST TELL THE WORLD.
Then Mamma Rosa replied to the Virgin Mary:
-But how will they believe me? I'm just a poor, ignorant peasant girl. I have no power. I’ll be thrown in prison!
The Virgin Mary answered:
-Do not fear, for I will give you a sign. You will see: this tree will blossom.
The Blessed Virgin vanished. On the same day, the pear tree, laden with fruit, blossomed generously with flowers which remained on the tree for three weeks, in spite of the heavy autumn rain.
This was the day on which Mamma Rosa’s great mission began. The Blessed Virgin appeared to her continuously, giving her many numerous messages addressed to the whole world, until Rosa’s death on 5 September 1981.
